Staying Near Kamala Beach
A Quiet Town with a Nice Beach and Good Hotels
Although its one of the larger towns on Phuket, Kamala is relatively less commercialised for tourism than the island’s other similar-sized beach resorts such as Karon or Kata which in itself makes it a more appealing place to stay for some people. That said, there is still quite a wide choice of both high-end and budget accommodation some of which is among Phuket’s best.
Passing through the town about half a kilometre inland is Kamala’s very wide and sometimes busy main road. Stretched along it are a variety of shops aimed at both residents and tourists yet aside from these conveniences and along with a few bars and restaurants it does not have much appeal in itself and, being quite far from sea, will not be the best part of Kamala for most visitors to stay in.
Near the Beach
Nearer to the beach and especially towards the southern end of it, the surroundings are much more pleasant and lively with small shops, restaurants and bars being scattered throughout the narrow road network . Additionally, running alongside most of central section of the beach is a tree-shaded walking path lined with food vendors and market stalls . There are plenty of resorts in this area including the huge Sunwing Resort (with its 7 pools !) that are mostly quite well-priced and very popular with families happy to be away from traffic and excessive nighlife noise. For many this is probably the most suitable part of Kamala to stay in.
Southern Part of the Beach
At the extreme south of the beach are several luxury resorts high on a hill surrounded by beautiful tropical forest. These resorts include some of Phukets finest such as the Andara and the Cape Sienna (an adult only resort) which can offer relaxing getaway experiences with beautiful views while being only a short drive from either Kamala Beach or Patong if guests feel the need for some shopping or nightlife.
Resorts In the Hills
For those who wish for an even more secluded environment or who have their own transport, hotels are located in all parts of town including up on the forested hills that overlook Kamala Bay. Aside from the extra peace and quiet there can also be a considerable cost saving with rates for similar standard accommodation being relatively lower than the likes of Karon or Kata.
Our Choice of the Best Hotels in the Kamala Area.
1Cape Sienna Phuket Hotel & Villa - in the upper price range, this hotel is located on a promontory above the ocean which allows spectacular seaviews. Its attractive and quiet location is suited to those looking to be away from the crowds while still being within a short drive of Kamala township and just 20 minutes from Patong. Children under 12 are not permitted so there are better choices for family groups though this policy might make it even more appealing to peace lovers.
2Andara Resort Villas - a luxury hotel in the same scenic location as the Cape Sienna Hotel that offers wonderful ocean views in luxurious surroundings. Guest ratings for this hotel are generally very high but its rather secluded location means transport is required to visit most other places on the island so its probably best suited to visitors desiring a peaceful resort experience well away from the noise of the towns.
3Layalina Hotel Phuket - a small (15 rooms), mid-priced boutique hotel located right next to the Kamala Beach that gets usually very good guest-reviews. The rooms are spacious, well appointed and have fantastic ocean views. Shops and bars are within walking distance with the main part of town being about 10 minutes away.
4Swissotel Resort - a 180 room resort that caters well for family groups by offering facilities such as a waterslide and a kids club to keep the little ones entertained as well as ideal group accommodation that is in the form of quite spacious suites featuring kitchenettes and separate bedrooms. Swissotel is quite well positioned between Kamala's main street and the beach both of which are in easy walking distance. Mostly very good ratings from guests.
5Sunwing Resort - with its access to seven swimming pools, spacious rooms and kids activities the Sunwing is very welcoming to families with small children. This resort is well situated being close to the beach and within easy walking distance of the more active part of Kamala township. Highly-rated by most guests and reasonably priced.
6Kamala Beach Resort - a large, mid-priced resort right next to the centre of Kamala Beach and handy to local shops and restaurants. Its another resort that is very family friendly and actually joins on to the equally big Sunwing Resort giving access to an additional five swimming pools. Generally well-rated by guests.
