Overview : Patong was the first town on Phuket to be seriously developed for tourism and is still the island’s most popular destination. At its centre is a compact and usually very busy commercial area that is jammed with bars, shops and restaurants. The busiest part spans the centre of the 3km-long Patong Beach with the area in and around Bangla Road being the heart of Phuket’s famous nightlife.
- Patong Beach (3km, white-sand)
- Famous nightlife scene
- Wide choice of restaurants & cuisine
- Modern shopping malls & Thai markets
Approx. Distances by Road :
- Airport - 38 km
- Phuket Town Centre - 16 km
- Karon Beach - 8 km
Central Patong & Bangla Road
The Shopping and Nightlife Areas in and Around Bangla Rd
- Easy walk to the beach
- Close to Phuket's busiest nightlife
- Lots of shops and restaurants
- Can be noisy close to Bangla Rd
- Busy traffic
Party fun is not what every Phuket visitor wants but its clear to see from the large, cheerful crowds that fill Bangla Road every night that an awful lot of them do.
Each evening this road is closed off and becomes filled with overseas tourists strolling around the countless neon-lit bars. The origins of these bars dates back to the wild entertainment laid on for the American military during the Vietnam war though today they are probably a lot tamer (but not necessarily quieter!) and are enjoyed by people of all ages with couples and even family groups being a common sight. There are lots of dancing girls, lady boys in full regalia and people partying but the atmosphere usually remains fun with the violence sometimes associated with drink being rare compared to many other countries.
During the day Bangla is, traffic-wise at least, one of the quieter roads in the town centre. A few bars, pubs and restaurants do moderate business and while rather quiet in itself, its still very handy to the busier shopping areas that surround it. A left turn at the beach-end will take you past some market-stalls selling food and tourist merchandise while at the other end lies the mega-mall of Jungceylon and yet more market stalls. Jungceylon (the old name for Phuket) has big international and Thai food courts along with movie theatres (english and Thai), free thai-style entertainment as well as several floors of quality shops selling everything from the latest electronics to bargain-priced and genuine designer clothing.
As can be seen on the small map (right) the beach-end of Bangla comes out almost in the middle of Patong Beach. While arguably not the islands’s best it is still very nice by most standards and although extremely popular it’s huge 2.5 km size makes finding uncrowded spots quite easy.
Staying near Bangla Road will not be to everyone’s taste but for those who want to be near the action of Patong a hotel within walking distance of this area allows access to possibly everything they will need to enjoy their holiday. This can not only save money on costly taxi (tuk tuk) rides but also save time and stress getting through the busy traffic.

The North and South of Patong Beach
Quieter Areas of Town that are Close to the Beach
- Relatively peaceful
- Quieter part of the beach nearby
- Lots of quality hotels
- May need tuk tuks to get to central area
- Fewer shops and bars
For those who prefer to escape the noise and traffic around the city centre then staying towards the quieter northern or southern ends of Patong Beach might be a good choice. Bars and restaurants are dotted throughout the town so you can usually find a nice place to enjoy an evening meal or drink wherever you stay in Patong but if you can’t then Bangla is either a pleasant stroll along the Beach Road or a short taxi ride away from these areas.
Advantages to some will be that they will be close the least crowded parts of the beach and don’t have to contend with party noise in the evenings or difficulty crossing a road during the day. The lighter traffic may particularly appeal to families with small children as the roads can be quite dangerous during the busy times of year.
Scenic coastal roads exit Patong near both ends of the beach leading to numerous other beaches and villages along Phuket’s western coast. Staying close by will allow visitors to explore the island without having to negotiate Patong's sometimes chaotic traffic. Most hotels will be able to arrange cheap motorbike or local car rentals.
Tip : its best to time excursions along these roads between 10:00am and 4:00pm if you wish to avoid the morning and evening rush hours completely. The northern exit to Kamala can get particularly busy with long grid locks a possibility.

4Holiday Inn Phuket Resort - opposite the southern part of Patong Beach this major 405 room resort is set in attractive landscaped gardens with nice swimming pools, a choice of restaurants and shopping being available within the complex. Better Hotel Rates and Views From The Hills
- Accommodation can be cheaper
- Good views possible from hillside
- Quite locations
- Tuk Tuks needed to reach the beach
- Steep slopes at some hillside hotels
Even though no part of the town is more than 15 minutes by tuk tuk from the beach a general rule of thumb regarding Patong accommodation is that the further away from the beach you stay the less you have to pay for the same quality. If the beach doesn’t interest you or you’re happy to spend your days around the hotel pool then there are some good value establishments to be found in this category.
But beware! If you plan on visiting the beach or the nightlife areas on a regular basis then local taxi transport is not particularly cheap and could amount to quite a sum by the end of your holiday. However, if you you can ride a motorbike then small 125cc bikes can be rented from (or arranged by) most hotels for around 250 baht per day which may solve the problem for you. Other alternatives are to use the cheap motorbike taxis or to walk ( most places can be walked to in under 30 mins wherever you stay).
Patong town is mostly flat but some hotels are built on the surrounding hills that overlook Patong Bay. These are usually small establishments offering often good quality accommodation at much lower rates than the big resorts. The downside is that they may not have features such as lifts and access if they are on a hillside, might be difficult. Some disabled visitors, in particular, would be wise to check carefully on a hotel's facilities and location before booking. Anyone who has trouble negotiating steep inclines would be best advised to avoid the hillside hotels altogether as some of the roads are extremely steep indeed.
If you are on a tighter budget, are happy to stay within the area around your hotel, don't mind riding motorbikes or walking a little bit then there are many very good hotels away from the beach front that offer great value.
Just outside Patong along the scenic coast road are quite a few resorts in attractive tropical, green settings that offer superb ocean views and high-standard resort facilities while still being only a short drive to Patong's town centre. For people who want to have peaceful tropical getaway with the option of visiting the shops and nightlife when the mood takes them these establishments may be a good choice.
Our Pick of Some Good Value-for-Money Hotels in Patong
1The Ashlee Plaza Patong - a newer hotel (2011) that offers nice, spacious rooms at budget rates. The southern part of Patong Beach is about 15 minutes walk away while a visit to the central nightlife area would, for most people, involve a 10 minute taxi ride. For the price, the Citin offers good value and early guest reviews have been extremely positive.
6Palmyra Patong Resort - popular with return visitors to Patong, the Palmyra offers excellent value for money in the lower price range having good quality rooms and a reputation for friendly service. Both the central nightlife area and beach are around fifteen minutes walk away. The Palmyra has 90 rooms but, as already mentioned, it is popular so it would pay to book early for the high season.
7BYD Lofts Boutique Hotel and Serviced Apartments - luxury serviced apartments with separate bedrooms, kitchen and dining areas. Though in the higher price range these apartments offer a high standard for the money and may be an economical choice for family or other groups. The beach is a ten minute walk away with Bangla Road being around fifteen. Guest reviews are consistently very high !
3Islanda Boutique Hotel - probably the cheapest hotel to be recommended on this page, the Islanda is firmly targeted towards the traveller on a budget but offers excellent accommodation in this class having clean, comfortable rooms with modern facilties such as LCD Tvs. Comments on the friendliness of staff are common in guest reviews. The location is probably beyond most people's idea of walking distance to the town centre so tuk tuks or motorbike taxis may be needed. For those that can ride a motorbike then cheap daily rentals are available all over Patong.
