Staying in Chalong

The Main Harbour and Departure Point for Many Boat Trips

Wat Chalong on the Island of Phuket
The stunning Wat Chalong is perhaps Phuket's most important temple as well as being a major tourist attraction

Located on Phuket’s eastern coast just to the south of Phuket Town, Chalong is known more for being the island’s main port rather than for being a major tourist destination. Its township is not overly attractive by Phuket’s high standards, does not have a recognised swimming beach nor does it have much in the way of nightlife but it does still have attributes that may make it the ideal place to stay for some people.

Chalong for Boaties

If you book a dive trip, a launch cruise or charter a boat then chances are that no matter where you book it you will end up being shuttled to Chalong Pier to board your vessel. Not so bad if you only have to do it once or twice but for those who plan on heading out to sea on a regular basis, actually staying in Chalong could save precious holiday-time and inconvenience. Its also worth noting that Chalong itself has no shortage of local diving, fishing and sighteseeing tour operators.

Cheaper in Chalong

Not being one of Phuket’s tourist hot spots means hotels of a similar standard tend to be lower priced which makes Chalong worth considering as a base for visitors who have their own transport as its quite handily placed within a short drive of a number of Phuket’s more popular locations with Patong, Karon and Phuket Town all being under 20 km away.

Other Good Points

Having quite a large urban area also means shops, restaurants and bars can be found scattered  throughout with even a little quiet nighlife happening in some parts. Furthermore, staying in Chalong allows easy access to some of the Phuket’s best known attractions such as the impressive Wat Chalong temple and the “Big Buddha” statue seen from miles around sitting atop the overlooking hill.
